Love Songs of Adoration: Oldies & New School

Rhythm & Blues has been a source of storytelling, a musical release of emotions, and an outlet for artists to dote on their lovers. Current R&B artists have taken the genre in a different direction, giving consumers cold-hearted, singing rap verses, leaving listeners yearning for the era when R&B was more about love and the singers weren't afraid to be vulnerable. The arts reflect the times; this age of R&B artists seems to be on the idgaf frequency and is extinguishing the music genre's evolution. Granted every love story is not all sunshine and daisies, heartbreak is real, and we want to hear about that as well. I'd like R&B artists to consider a musical reset for the genre and tap back into what made R&B beautiful, culturally authentic, and a lover's lane. Stop being such a hard ass. I searched to find a great current R&B album with mostly songs of love and aspiration. I am still looking, if you have suggestions let me know. However, I have composed a list of some R&B songs from then and now that will surely make you feel as if the song is specifically for you.

Sam Cooke's 'Bring It On Home to Me' was released on May 8, 1962. The vocalist pleads for his lover to return, he admits he messed up, and knows it's up to him to make it right. "I'll give you jewelry and money too, that ain't all I'll do for you, baby if you bring it to me, bring your sweet lovin', bring it on home to me." While the debates on what is considered an expensive or reasonable date continue, Mr. Cooke and the men of his time understood the art of wooing a woman and for the right one he was willing to do it all. What do y'all think? Did the love interest ever bring it on home to him?

Mary Wells' 'What Love Has Joined Together' was released in 1964. Ms. Wells makes it clear that no one and nothing is coming between her and her man. She helped mold the Motown impression in music history. Not to step on any toes but she was also revered as the original First Lady of Motown. She had hits such as 'Two Lovers' and 'Old Love (Let's Try Again)'. Mary sang about her romantic partnerships and their escapades. She didn't hold anything back, and great music was the result. Fun Fact: My father's mother is the alleged half-sister to Ms. Mary Wells. So if any of her descendants can confirm please contact me.

There are numerous descriptions for the Artist Formerly Known as Prince; musician, songwriter, vocalist, and musical genius. This man was unapologetically himself and his music was a direct display of such. One of my all-time favorites is 'The Most Beautiful Girl In the World'. How can you not love this song? I instantly feel beautiful the moment I hear the intro. I think one of the best things about this song is it does not necessarily have to pertain to romantic love, you can dedicate the song to your daughter, mother, or any special woman or girl in your life. The versatility and empowerment of this musical masterpiece is a format worth preserving.

India Arie's 'The Truth' released in September of 2002 is a love song about the depth of her love and appreciation for her lover. The songstress sensually sings the admiration of his qualities that make her feel ethereal. This song is the embodiment of two lovers pouring into each other with the effects of a healthy and loving partnership.

SG Lewis and Louis Matters did what needed to be done on 'No Less'. I practically play this song every day. He sings of not settling for giving his lover anything less than what she deserves. Having standards for what you will accept in a romantic relationship is one thing, but how often do you hear of people setting the expectation for refusing to be lousy lovers? The dedication and effort pledged to be a great partner are almost unheard of in current R&B music. Take Notes, Fellas!

Miguel's 'Adorn' was the lover's anthem of 2012. This song is played at weddings and anniversary celebrations currently. 'Adorn' perfectly states the sentiments of a lover enmeshed with a love like no other. You know how it is when you are in love, everything about that person seems perfect and love in its purest form. Miguel blessed us with a classic to add to the R&B discography.

Additional artists who gave us great R&B Adoration music are Sam Smith with hit single 'Latched' and NAO's 'Adore You'.
