The Little Mermaid :
Over the weekend I had the pleasure while fulfilling my auntie duties of viewing the highly anticipated release of Disney’s the little mermaid. ‘The Little Mermaid’ was the first Disney movie I supported as a child. I liked Ariel because we both have “A” names and I had aspirations to sing during that time. (LOL, oh the joys of childlike exploration, thinking we can do it all) I recall having the little mermaid beach towel and my grandparents buying me her memorabilia from the Disney shows at the LA sports arena. I looked forward to the advancements in cinematography, music, and the flavor the newer actors would add to the film. Halle Bailey and co-star Jonah-Hauer King did a great job of depicting the love story. Halle’s singing voice is a perfect cast for the leading role, and the costumes, and alluring visuals captivating young viewers could be heard echoing throughout theaters nationwide. (Kids blurting out their reactions during the movie always tickle me) Multiple back-to-back show times, filling domestic auditoriums grossed 38 million opening day and is projected to be No. 1 at the box office for the 4-day weekend. I think it’s fair to say Ms. Bailey and the gills splashed all the haters and gave them their fins to kiss!
Run the World Season II premier:
I’ve been patiently awaiting the return of my favorite, fun, female friends of Harlem! Season one left us with the suspense of Ola and Whitney’s engagement possibly being called off, Ella deciding whether to pursue her passion, Renee stepping out to start her own marketing firm, and Sondi realizing that there are things she is willing to do in the name of love but giving up her personal space isn’t one of them. Secrets were held and or revealed.
Unfortunately, we will not see the return of Ella in season II. While her presence will be missed, her absence provides the ladies with insight to prioritize themselves; As Whitney learns to move on past her broken engagement, Renee prepares to go solo in a competitive market, and Sondi assesses her value aside from providing care to others. Run the World Season II is giving sisterhood, self-love, accountability, and fun. All of these are commonalities among women circles in their late 20s to 30s. Tune in to the televised theatrics airing on Starz, Fridays at midnight.
Problem recently released 'I Owe Myself' where he speaks of the album's title, fatherhood specifically co-parenting and balancing his career. I can respect the maturity of the art. Similar sentiments are expressed in J-Cole's verse on Summer Walker's 'To Summer, From Cole'. Cole expresses how Summer being open about her experiences with parenthood made him reflect on his own. I think it is a good thing for more artists to utilize their music to express other real aspects of their lives that their fans resonate with. Music is a form of historical documentation of “the social happenings” in real-time. Summer Walker's new EP 'Clear 2: Soft Life' features music where she speaks of the current conversations surrounding dating and romantic partnerships. Walker’s ‘Mind Yo Mouth’ documents the era of dating coaches and relationship gurus “guiding and encouraging women” to submit and be the “perfect” pick for men. TBH the entire EP is a testament to the current conversations surrounding love and companionship for Millennials and Gen-Z. Dawn Richard is serving sexy, sultry, and all shades of Brown & Bomb with the visuals for her new single ‘Jacuzzi’. Miguel is heating up the airways with former hits reaching Hot 100 peaks while simultaneously releasing blazing singles like 'Give it To Me'.
